lots of people have thought about it, there are many books written about the history of halloween
I believe it started as a pagan ritual (by a different name) and then got adopted by christians.

This is a good video about it:
it's comes from a period of time where the living and the dead overlap. there are many forms in many european cultures. all saints day derives from the roman version.
